Ludwig GITTLER - Veteran Doctor Dies

Dr. Ludwig GITTLER, 79, physician and surgeon in Fairfield for nearly a half century, died Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. at the Jefferson County Hospital where he had been admitted the night before.

Private funeral services will be conducted in accordance with family wishes with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Raymond Funeral Home Thursday afternoon and evening.

Ludwig GITTLER was born in Bendzin, Poland, May 12, 1898. He came to the United States in 1924 and practiced medicine in Chicago before moving to Fairfield in 1930.

He established his office at 107 W. Broadway and remained at that location for 31 years before he moved to his new building on the Glasgow road 15 years ago.

Dr. GITTLER retired June 30 this year and sold his office building after 55 years of practice, 47 years of those years in Fairfield.

He was a member of the Jefferson County, Iowa and National Medical Societies. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks, and a 50-year member of the Iowa State Medical Society.

Dr. GITTLER was a veteran of World War II serving in Europe with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was division surgeon of the 34th Army Division. He also served with the Iowa National Guard.

His marriage to Maxine STEELE took place Sept. 9, 1939. She survives. The family home is on the Glasgow Road at the sourtheast edge of Fairfield.

In addition to this widow, Dr. GITTLER is survived by one sister, Mrs. Max FRANK, Chicago; also a niece and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by three sisters.
