Fairfield Ledger
March 28, 1900
Pg. 3 Col. 2(Transcriber note: Grace's headstone at Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa in Old.P.279 is engraved with the name "Grace M.", with the dates "1900-1901" engraved as well. However, the following obituary notice found for her in this March 28th, 1900 edition of the Fairfield Ledger, as well as an in-person examination of the original death records on file at the Jefferson County courthouse provide that Grace WHITHAM was three months old and died on March 20, 1900. The WHITHAM family plot of headstones are collectively the same style and not likely to have been "original". That Grace's headstone was mis-engraved was noted in the Evergreen cemetery listing by Verda Baird as "stone wrong"; referring to the dates engraved.)
Grace, a three-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. WHITHAM, died at the home of her parents, a mile west of the city, the evening of the 20th inst. She had been ill about two weeks. The remains were interred in the Evergreen cemetery Thursday, Rev. I.O. Kemble conducting the funeral services. There are many friends in the community who will sympathize with the family in its loss.
