Death of Levi GANTZ.

Levi GANTZ, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Blackhawk township, died at this home seven and a half miles northwest of this city yesterday morning. While he had been in ill health for several years, his death at this time was really unexpected. Mr. GANTZ was a native of Washington county, Penn., and was born September 4th, 1832. He grew to manhood in the county of his nativity, and in 1854 was married to Miss Sarah PAUL, who survives him. They were the parents of eight children, five of whom are now living in this county--John A., Mae and Effie GANTZ, Mrs. Ed HEWETT and Mrs. S. A. COPELAND. In 1855 Mr. GANTZ made a trip to Iowa and entered a tract of land in Madison county which he afterwards sold. In 1858, accompanied by his wife and family, he came to Jefferson county and purchased the farm in Blackhawk township on which he died. He was an industrious man and a progressive farmer, and the small farm which he first secured gradually grew to a holding of 500 acres. In the community in which he spent so much of his life he was held in the highest honor and esteem, for his honesty of purpose and integrity were beyond all question. His death will be very generally regretted by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at the home in Blackhawk township this afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Rev. Leander Lane, pastor of the Christian church of this city.
