Grace McGIFFIN BARWISE, 500 S. Main St., died at 11:15 a.m. today at the Nelson Nursing Home. A resident of Fairfield for 65 years, she was 91.
Private burial services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery with arrangements in charge of the Raymond Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held March 25 at 4 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church.
The former Grace Cecilia PETITE, Mrs. BARWISE was born March 17, 1891 in Atlantic, Iowa. She was the daughter of Albert M. PETITE and Almeda May CURTIS. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught kindergarten in Albia for four years.
She was married to Don McGIFFIN June 23, 1915 in Atlantic. The couple spent two years in Washington D.C. where McGIFFIN served as secretary to Iowa Congressman C.W. Ramseyer. They moved to Fairfield in 1917 when McGIFFIN purchased an interest in the Ledger. He served as publisher of the newspaper until his death in May, 1939.
Mrs. BARWISE was married to John BARWISE, Fairfield attorney, in 1949. He preceded her in death Nov. 24, 1956.
Mrs. BARWISE was one of the founders of Abracadabra Club, organized in 1921. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Chapter C of PEO, and the Fairfield Women's Club. The latter organization honored her as a 50-year charter member in 1979.
Mrs. BARWISE's home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1915 by J. Frederick Clarke, local physician. The home is also listed in the Historic American Buildings Survey as an outstanding example of the Prairie School of Architecture.
Mrs. BARWISE was known to many Fairfielders through her work in Little Theatre, Parsons College theatre and the Women's Club revues of the 1940's and 1950's. She played leading roles in many local productions, including "You Can't Take It With You", "Harvey", "The Silver Whistle", "Arsenic and Old Lace", "The Little Foxes", "Solid Gold Cadillac" and "The Glass Menagerie."
She appeared with Fay Emerson in "The Matchmaker" and with Margaret O'Brien in "Gigi."
Mrs. BARWISE was a major stockholder of the Fairfield Daily Ledger, Inc. She is survived by a son, Jim McGIFFIN, Ellensburg, Wash.; a daughter, Jean MARTIN, Beardstown, Ill.; eight grand-children, four great-grandchildren and a brother, A.C. PETITE, Bronxville, N.Y. One son preceded her in death.

A memorial service for Grace McGIFFIN BARWISE will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. BARWISE, 500 S. Main St., died March 11 at the age of 91. She had been a resident of Fairfield for 65 years.
The memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Carl Riggs. Arrangements are in charge of the Raymond Funeral Home.

McGIFFIN & JEAN McGIFFIN MARTIN WERE APPOINTED CO-EXECUTORS OF SAID ESTATE.
