May 30, 1900Death of James ECKERT
James ECKERT, who had been confined to his home by paralysis for nearly ten months, passed away Monday morning. He was a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania, and was born October 4th, 1823. His earlier years were spent in his native state, and he removed to this county, which had been his home for more than half a century, in the spring of 1844. He was married to Leanna WISE (sic. a/k/a Leana L WISE; "Leana" on her headstone inscription), who survives him, February 12th, 1850, and they were the parents of six children. Three of these survive the father - Mrs. W.H. YOUNG and James ECKERT, jr., of this city, and Mrs. E.W. CRAINE (sic. a/k/a CRANE) of Missouri Valley. In his earlier years in this community Mr. ECKERT was in the employ of the late Robert McELHINNY, who conducted an extensive mercantile business, and afterwards was one of the successors to this business. He was also for several years deputy treasurer of Jefferson county and had held other positions of responsiblity and trust. Mr. ECKERT was one of the early members of Clinton Masonic lodge of this city and was its secretary for many years. He was a man of excellent character and had many friends in the community who will sorrow at his death. The remains were interred with the masonic honors yesterday afternoon, Rev. J.F. Magill conducting the funeral services.
