Another Pioneer Gone.

Mrs. Ann Eliza WISE ECKERT died Sunday afternoon at the home of her niece, Mrs. W.H. YOUNG of North Main street. Mrs. ECKERT had been in poor health for some time before death came to relieve her from her sufferings. Two years ago today she sustained a severe fall which broke her hip, and as a result of this injury has been confined to her bed almost continuously ever since. During the last five months she was unable to leave her bed and nine weeks ago she suffered a paralytic stroke which rendered her speechless. She was born in Tuscomba, Ala., March 12th, 1828, and came to this county in 1850. In 1851 she was married to Robt. POPE, who died eleven months later. In 1852 she was united in marriage to David ECKERT, who preceded her to the great beyond over thirty years ago. She had been a devoted member of the Methodist church for over seventy years. Mrs. ECKERT had many friends in this city and was a respected and loveable woman. Besides her numerous friends who will mourn her death she leaves two nieces, Mrs. E. W. CRANE of Council Bluffs and Mrs. W.H.YOUNG of this city. Funeral services were held from the YOUNG home yesterday, Rev. Thos. Osborn officiating, and burial was made in Evergreen cemetery.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the subject.

Transcriber note: While the obituary stated that the burial was in Evergreen Cemetery (Fairfield, Iowa), there is no written record of her burial there, nor a headstone found for her. Her two previous husbands, Robert B POPE (d.1851) and David E ECKERT (d.1879) are buried in a joint plot (#89) at the adjacent Old Fairfield City cemetery. The single headstone in place on that lot has the name and date inscriptions for these two husbands. It is possible that Ann was buried in that plot, without a headstone installed or engraved; the names of the two cemeteries were sometimes interchanged in obituary references that were published. It seems likely that her exact burial location will not be known given these circumstances.
