LONG, Richard Dean -- Richard Dean LONG, 77, formerly of Fairfield, died Monday, April 12, 2010.

Burial took place Thursday in Broomfield, Colo.

Mr. LONG was born Feb. 5, 1933, in Fairfield, the son of Portia Mae HARPER LONG and Maurice Kinley LONG. He married Beverly Anne STRANSKY Sept. 12, 1959.

Mr. LONG was a grandson of Beatrice and A.K. HARPER, founder of Harper Brush Works. He graduated from Wheaton Academy High School in 1951 and Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., in 1955. He graduated from Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1959. Mr. LONG was in the South Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1959 to 1964 and was the senior minister of churches in Pulaski-Troy and Madrid. In 1965, he transferred to Rocky Mountain Conference and served as an associate pastor at First United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs, Colo., until 1968. He and his family were accepted by the Board of Missions of the Methodist Church for missionary service from 1968 to 1974. He was assigned as a teacher to the Methodist Theological School in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia, working with the Ibans. Upon his return to the United States, Mr. LONG completed his master's degree in business at Southern Methodist University. He then returned to the local church and served as senior pastor in churches in Colorado until his retirement in 1999.

Mr. LONG was active in the family business Harper Brush Works and in community organizations, including Lions and Rotary clubs.

He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Susan Bea LONG, Sarah Kaye HOLLEY and Sandra Dee LONG; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Stanley LONG of Winona Lake, Ind., and Ronald LONG of Fairfield.
