Lauretta MCFARLAND dies at 87

Lauretta Joy MCFARLAND, 87, Route 2, died at 5:25 p.m. Monday at the Jefferson County Hospital (sic. Dec. 20, 1982).

A native of Fairfield, Mrs. MCFARLAND was the mother of the late Lucille FRAY, Ottumwa, who gave out all ten of her children for adoption when she learned she suffered terminal cancer.

The story appeared in the Red Book magazine and Readers Digest, and plans are being made to make the story into a motion picture.

Mrs. Richard BOYD, 700 S. Seventh, is one of the ten children who were adopted. She said other grandchildren are expected to attend the services. One is deceased.

Mrs. MCFARLAND was a member of the United Methodist Church and Eastern Star, and served the community as a telephone operator for 40 years.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Raymond Funeral Home. The Rev. Lester Smith will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Memorials are requested for the Heart Fund.

Lauretta Joy MCFARLAND was born April 9, 1895, in Fairfield. She was the daughter of Frank J. and Elizabeth JONES EDWARDS. She was married to Frank MCFARLAND in 1913.

Survivors include two sons, Warren, Fairfield, and Keith, Lockridge; a brother, John W. Edwards, Rock Island, Ill.; and a number of grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. MCFARLAND was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, a sister, a brother and a grandchild.
