Anna Margretta GIMBEL, 88, of Fairfield, died at 4:39 a.m. today, Monday, March 29, 2010, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Margretta GIMBEL

Margretta GIMBEL, age 88, of Fairfield, died March 29, 2010, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2010, at the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield, with Pastor Philip Barker officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Family visitation will be 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Behner Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or donor's choice. Cards can be sent to: 1102 Kodi Circle, Fairfield, Iowa.

Anna Margretta ROOT was born November 25, 1921, in Marietta, Minnesota, to Edward and Anna Christine EBSEN ROOT. In 1926, the family moved to Watertown, South Dakota, where she attended school and graduated from Watertown High School. She married John GIMBEL on September 8, 1946, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, South Dakota. John and Gretta moved to Fairfield in 1946 when they purchased the T.E. McLean Jewelry Store and established Gimbel's Jewelers. Gretta was a member of Chapter C, P.E.O., Fairfield Golf and Country Club, Fairfield Women's Club and First Lutheran Church. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life.

John passed away on November 6, 2005. Gretta is survived by her daughter, Christine (Rick) SMALL of Fairfield; two grandchildren, Thomas (Jaimee) SMALL of West Des Moines and Carrie (Ben) ROACH of West Des Moines; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Cameron and Brendan ROACH and Ashlan Christine SMALL. Gretta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; three brothers, George, Bob and Arvie ROOT; and one sister, Julia ROOT BUFFINGTON.
