RUSSELL, Betty -- Betty RUSSELL, 81, of Centerville, died Saturday, March 27, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.

A service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Centerville. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation is all day today at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church and may be left at or mailed to Thomas Funeral Home, 23548 Hwy 5, P.O. Box 125, Centerville 52544.

Mrs. RUSSELL was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Centerville, the daughter of Fred and Mamie PACKARD LYONS. She married Oliver "Pep" RUSSELL June 20, 1948. He died Jan. 1, 1986.

Mrs. RUSSELL received her education from Forbush and Centerville schools, graduating in 1946. She was employed at Iowa Southern Utilities for more than seven years as a secretary and salesperson. While raising her family, she sold Avon and worked as a receptionist at Dr. Gleason's office, as a secretary at First Baptist Church and as an office manager for First United Methodist Church and Faith United Parish for more than 27 years before retiring June 30, 1999.

Mrs. RUSSELL was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was a choir member. She also was a member of Diaconate Board, Christian Education Board and Christian and Professional Business Women's After 5 group. She was chairwoman of Area III Region/Love Gift, treasurer of Area III American Baptist Women, chairwoman of Region ABW/College Student Aid, secretary of Reaching All People Together of Appanoose County and president and circle leader of American Baptist Women. She taught Sunday school and volunteered at the Lord's Cupboard and New Hope Couseling Center in Centerville.

Survivors include two children, Reta POPE and husband Don of Fairfield and Bruce RUSSELL and wife Deanna of Rathbun; one son-in-law, Tom BELLOMA of Centerville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, John LYONS of Cedar Rapids.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Linda BELLOMA.
