CAROLINE SPIELMAN CRAFF

On Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock Mrs. Caroline CRAFF, wife of the late Michael J. CRAFF, was summoned from this life to the eternal. Caroline SPIELMAN was born May 5, 1841, in Germanville, Iowa. Shortly after birth she was baptized in the Germanville Lutheran church, at that time a log cabin. When about 18 years of age she was instructed in the doctrine of her church and on April 17, 1859 her pastor, Rev. G. Haack, confirmed her. The vows taken on that day were sacred to her thruout her life time. One year later in 1860 she was married to Michael J. CRAFF. Some time after their wedding Mr. CRAFF gave ear to his country's call to arms and joined the colors as a U.S. Volunteer. These were very hard and trying times to the young wife but she was brave and courageous. The end of the war brought her young husband back to her. To their union 7 children were born, two of whom preceded their parents in death. In 1904 final taps were sounded for her husband.

During the last summer she visited her son, Edward, near Lockridge; while there she contracted a severe cold that could not be broken. She returned home hoping that she would regain her health but instead she grew worse. On the morning of October 2 the children were consulted and they thought it advisable to take her to a hospital. In the afternoon they took her to the Fairfield hospital. Once it seemed as though she was on the way to recovery, but these fond hopes were soon blasted. The children gradually came to know that they were nursing their mother in her last illness. Her death due to Brights disease and heart trouble was not unexpected. There are left to mourn her demise her children, Mrs. Maggie SINN, John, William, Edward and Mae together with many friends and neighbors. It is not necessary to extol her firm Christian character for her life was an open book to all who knew and loved her.

The pastor of the Lutheran church had charge of the funeral Friday afternoon, interment was made in the Lutherin (sic. Lutheran) cemetery. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."
