SMITH, Richard Duane 'Smitty' -- Richard Duane "Smitty" SMITH, 78 of Bloomfield, died Friday morning, March 19, 2010, at home.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bloomfield Christian Church, with the Rev. Chuck Ahlemann officiating. A private burial of cremains will be at Antioch Cemetery in Jefferson County.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church.

Memorials to Iowa Hospice in Oskaloosa may be left at the church or may be mailed to Memphis Funeral Home, 378 S. Market St., Memphis, MO 63555.

Mr. SMITH was born Oct. 31, 1931, near Wayland. He married Sharon Kay COOP May 27, 1956, at Antioch Church in Jefferson County.

Mr. SMITH graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1950. He was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard for nine years and worked as a lineman for the Mount Pleasant Telephone Company for 6.5 years. In August 1957, he graduated from the Iowa Highway Patrol Academy and served as an Iowa state trooper in southeast Iowa until his retirement in 1987.

Mr. SMITH served on the Davis County School Board. He was a member of the Bloomfield City Council and Iowa Troopers Association. He was a volunteer for the Lord's Cupboard in Bloomfield.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rick SMITH of Centerville, Kent SMITH and wife Michelle of Oskaloosa and Lafe SMITH and wife Melissa of Owatonna, Minn.; one daughter, Susan JOHNSON and husband Todd of Olds; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth GHOLSON, and one half brother, Ronald GHOLSON.
