A Sad Event

The death of little Nellie, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis (sic. Louis) J. HIRSHBERGER, in this city, Saturday morning, comes indeed as a vistiation of sorrow to a wide circle of friends. It is all the more sad when it is known that less than a year ago another little daughter of the bereaved parents died very suddenly after a few days' illness. Little Nellie was a bright winsome lass of scarce five summers, a beautiful little child, whose kindly and unselfish manner and pretty ways endeared her in hearts far beyond the limits of the home circle. Though never rugged, she seemed strong and healthy until but a short time before her death, and her passing away could scarcely have been more sudden or unespected. Her disease was an affliction of the throat, similar to that which took away her little sister a few months ago. The funeral occurred from the residence of the parents Monday afternoon, Rev. W.M. Sparr officiating.

The sorrow stricken parents desire us to tender their thanks to the many friends whose kind offices in the hour of sorrow are worthy more than passing mention.

Transcriber note: The family name of HIRSHBERGER as used in the obituary can also be found spelled as HERSCHBERGER in other family sources, including the spelling of the surname on the headstones at Evergreen Cemetery, Old.P.327. A sister of Louis was Christine/Christina HIRSHBERGER SPIELMAN; she used the HIRSHBERGER spelling and she is also buried at Evergreen Cemetery in the TURNEY/SPIELMAN/HARRISON mausoleum.

There is some confusion about the deaths of the two children of Louis and Phoebe HIRSHBERGER/HERSCHBERGER: in finding the obituary notices for these two sisters it appears that they died within a few months of each other and, while buried separately, share a common headstone:

"MARY ELLEN
CATHERINE HILL
HERSHBERGER"

The Mary Ellen mentioned would appear to be for the "Nellie" as referred to in the obituary above. It should be noted that an 1880 census has been found that spells the name as Nelly.
