The Fairfield Ledger
Wednesday March 24, 1880

Catherine, youngest child of Louis and Phoebe HIRSHBERGER, aged one year and ten months, died in Des Moines last Monday morning, of congestion of the brain. Mrs. H. is visiting friends there, while Mr. H. is traveling in Kansas.

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I am not related to the persons mentioned.

-------
Transcriber note: The family name of HIRSHBERGER as used in the obituary can also be found spelled as HERSHBERGER in the spelling of the surname on the headstones at Evergreen Cemetery, Old.P.327 for Louis and his two daughters (wife Phoebe is without a headstone in the plot). A sister of Louis was Christine/Christina HIRSHBERGER SPIELMAN; she used the HIRSHBERGER spelling and she is also buried at Evergreen Cemetery in the TURNEY/SPIELMAN/HARRISON mausoleum.

Evidently Catherine was buried in this plot at Evergreen Cemetery but possibly without an individual headstone; her older sister "Nellie" (believed to be Ellen Clark HIRSHBERGER/HERSHBERGER) died on February 5, 1881 and was also buried in this plot (purchased on this date by their father).

There is one headstone now in place for both girls, engraved:

"MARY ELLEN
CATHERINE HILL
HERSHBERGER"

------
The Evergreen Cemetery original notes of burials for this particular family use the HIRSHBERGER spelling. It seems possible now that the headstones were engraved phonetically and were not corrected by the family after the headstones were installed.

Be aware of these two variations of the family surname if researching this family.
