SAMMONS, John F. -- John F. SAMMONS, 71, of Rome, Iowa, died Friday evening, Feb. 26, 2010, at home.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Jerry Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Grant Cemetery in Rome, Iowa.

Visitation began at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Mr. SAMMONS' memory.

Mr. SAMMONS was born Sept. 11, 1938, in Rome, Iowa, the son of Harry C. and Mercedes RUBY SAMMONS. He married Carol WHITE Feb. 11, 1963, in Aledo, Ill.

Mr. SAMMONS worked for Cessford Construction Company for 45 years until retiring in March 2009. He owned and operated Sammons and Sons Trucking.

He served as mayor of Rome, Iowa, and helped build the Rome Baptist Church and Rome City Hall. He also was the road crew for the city of Rome.

Mr. SAMMONS enjoyed going to pawn shops, going to auctions and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brian BURDEN of Mount Pleasant and Doug BURDEN and wife Brenda of New London; one daughter, Denise COSGROVE and husband Tony of Salem; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Myra PAINTER of Ottumwa and Sharon HEMM of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Johnnie; and one daughter, Rhonda.
