ABERNATHY, Roberta O. -- Roberta O. ABERNATHY, 88, of Selma, died at 2:25 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Ann Donat officiating. Burial will be in Iowaville Cemetery in Selma.
Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6-7 p.m.
Memorials to Iowaville Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 12179 118th Road, Selma 52588.
Mrs. ABERNATHY was born July 31, 1921, near Birmingham, the daughter of Thomas L. and Olive LAYMAN SPEES. She married Arden ABERNATHY Oct. 30, 1959. He died Dec. 27, 1985.
During her youth, Mrs. ABERNATHY moved to a farm near Selma and graduated from Selma High School in 1939. She and her husband lived in Eldon, and she returned to Selma after his death. She had been a cook at Selma School. She also had worked at Universal Producing Co. in Fairfield, helped her husband with his fertilizer business and driven a school bus for Cardinal schools from 1976 to 1993, when she retired.
Mrs. ABERNATHY was a member of Selma United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert SPEES of Warrenton, Mo., and Richard SPEES of Selma.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Ruth FINDLAY.
