PECK, Ruth Marie -- Ruth Marie PECK, age 80, of 702 (? edge of column blurred) South Second St., Fairfield, died at 6:00 P.M. Thursday, March 17, 2005, at the Jefferson County Hospital Hospice room in Fairfield.
She was born March 31, 1924 in Columbus, Montana, the oldest child of Charles Barton and Gladys Genevieve JOHNSON HARLAN. She graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1942. After working for a year as executive secretary to J. Hugh Arenson, future governor of Montana, she began higher education at Montana State College in Bozeman, MT.
Following Pearl Harbor she enlisted in the WAVES, serving as executive secretary to officers on both coasts. During her military service she met and married ______ Robert (Jack) WARD of Mt. Pleasant. They lived in both Iowa and Montana during their marriage, having two children David and Joyce. They later divorced.
Ruth married Orville J. PECK on December 28, 1967 at Lomax, Illinois. He died December 26, 1979.
Ruth was a grade school teacher, graduating from Parsons College. She taught in the Cardinal and Keota school districts for 31 years. She and Orville ran Peck's Tavern and Restaurant in Libertyville. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Ruth was a strong influence in her grandsons' lives.
Ruth is survived by her children David WARD and wife Marge of Des Moines, and Joyce WARD of Fairfield; her grandsons, Shawn WARD and Michelle of Glenwood, IA and Nick WARD and fiancé Denae of Fairfield, 3 sisters: Helen BAILEY of Helena, Montana, Donna SCHERMERHORN of Renton, Washington, and Marg HOUSER and Sie of Havre, MT. She also will be missed by great grandchildren, Maegan, Cassie, Gavin, Morgan, Sarah, Natalie, Britt and Brenna, a special niece, Michelle and husband Mike KNIGGE, in addition to other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Fairfield with Pastor Kurt Makower officiating.
Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at Raymond Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.
