BUCKLES, Howard W. -- Howard W. BUCKLES, 78, of Keosauqua, died at 4:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center Hospice in Keosauqua.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elsa Lawry, the Rev. Ann Donat and the Rev. ellis andrews (lower case sic) officiating. Burial will be in Fellows Cemetery in Keosauqua.

Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the family present from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Memorials to Keosauqua Lions Club or to the family for a memorial to be designated later may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at P.O. Box 267, Keosauqua 52565.

Mr. BUCKLES was born April 22, 1931, near Douds, the son of Ellsworth R. and Ruth ROBERTS BUCKLES. He married Arlene RIDER Dec. 25, 1952, in Milton.

Mr. BUCKLES graduated from Troy High School in 1948 and lived most of his life in Keosauqua. He graduated from Reppert School of Auctioneering in Indiana in 1950. He and his wife owned and operated the Standard Oil Service Station in Keosauqua for 29 years. In recent years, he served as a step-on tour guide for the Villages of Van Buren bus tours.

Mr. BUCKLES served in the United States Army from 1952-1954. He was stationed in Japan and Korea.

He was active in the Keosauqua Fire Department, Keosauqua City Council, Beer-Barker American Legion Post No. 113, Sheep Empire Association, Keosauqua Light and Power Board, Keosauqua Economic Development Association, Keosauqua Lions Club and Lebanon United Methodist Church. He also served as a two-time president of the Iowa Auctioneers Association in 1981. He was Iowa State Champion Auctioneer twice and was inducted into the National Auctioneers Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Iowa and Missouri Auctioneers Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Bill BUCKLES and wife Pat of Wichita, Kan.; one daughter, Diana WOLF and husband Chris of Keosauqua; and four grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Kathy; and one infant son, Larry.
