STRAIT, Rex -- Rex STRAIT, 91, of rural Keosauqua, died at 10:33 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

STRAIT, Rex E. -- Rex E. STRAIT, 91, of rural Keosauqua, died at 10:33 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

A funeral was held this morning at Keosauqua United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elsa Lawry and the Rev. ellis andrews (lower case sic) officiating. Burial was in Pittsburg Cemetery.

Memorials to Keosauqua United Methodist Church or Pittsburg Cemetery may be left at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua or may be mailed to the family at 17937 185th Road, Keosauqua 52565.

Mr. STRAIT was born July 1, 1918, in Pittsburg, west of Keosauqua, the son of Garfield and Willa KERR STRAIT. He married Eleanor BEATTY March 15, 1941, at her parents' home in Keosauqua.

Mr. STRAIT graduated from Keosauqua High School as valedictorian of the class of 1936. He sang in a boys' quartet and was active in 4-H. He spent his life farming in the neighborhood where he was born.

Mr. STRAIT was a member of Keosauqua United Methodist Church, where he served in many offices and sang in the choir. He also sang for many years in the Wapello Chief's Barbershop Chorus in Ottumwa and Four Bottom Plow Quartet in Van Buren County. He was a past president of Van Buren County Farm Bureau, a past president of Keosauqua Lions Club and a past president and long-time secretary of Van Buren County Fair Board. Mr. STRAIT was a long-time 4-H leader and had been a director of Southern Iowa Rural Electric Coop Board in Bloomfield. He had served on the Keosauqua School board.

He and his wife were honored as Keosauqua Citizens of the Year. He had also been recognized as Outstanding Pork Producer of the Year and as a leader in soil conservation.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Darrell STRAIT and wife Susan of Bolivar, Mo., and Marvin STRAIT and wife Doris of Keosauqua; one daughter, Lynnette DUNN of Glenwood; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Beryl SHEROD and Jeannete TAYLOR.
