CAVNER, Caryl D. (Sr.) -- Caryl D. CAVNER Sr., 77, of Richland, died early Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at his home.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Richland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kim Gates and the Rev. Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 504.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, with the family present from 5-7 p.m. and Masonic rites at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or Shriner's Crippled Children Hospital. Memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 84, Richland 52585 or may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. CAVNER was born Dec. 13, 1932, in Taylor County near Hopkins, Mo., the son of Samuel Roy and Flovia Rose FINE CAVNER. He married Mary Elaine SIERP Sept. 30, 1955 in Hopkins.

Mr. CAVNER grew up in the Hopkins area and graduated from Braddyville High School in 1951. He worked in road construction in various supervisory positions for Kaser Cosntruction and Manatts' Inc. of Brooklyn, Iowa. He purchased Dugger Construction and operated it as Cavner Construction from 1978-1997. He and his wife wintered in Texas but lived in Adel, Waukee, Monroe, Martinsburg and Richland.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Mr. CAVNER was a member of Richland American Legion Post No. 504, Richland Masonic Lodge No. 38, AF & AM, Davenport Valley of the Scottish Rite, Royal Order of Jesters, Kaaba Shrine Clubs and units: Ottumwa Shrine Club, Potentate's Escort Unit and Kaaba Rag Tops Unit.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Caryl CAVNER Jr. and wife Loriann of Richland; two daughters, Marsha COOK and husband Craig of Longmont, Colo., and Brenda WOLCOTT and husband Jeff of Richland; two brothers, Kenneth CAVNER of Maryville, Mo., and Merlin CAVNER of Atlantic; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Rose BEERY.
