SMITH, Bettye Kathryn -- Bettye Kathryn SMITH, 89, of Fairfield, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Following Mrs. SMITH's wishes, her body will be cremated.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or The Lord's Cupboard. Cards and memorials may be sent to 15915 Te. V-64, Douds 52551.

Mrs. SMITH was born March 10, 1920, in Fairfield, the daughter of Floyd and Gladys C. LEWIS GAINES. She married Theodore Burns SMITH, and they later divorced.

Mrs. SMITH graduated from Fairfield High School. She began her career as owner of Smitty's Cafe. She was later the dining room manager of a Parsons College quad and manager of The Stever House. She then retired after 20 years with Seifert's Clothing Store.

Mrs. SMITH was a member of First Lutheran Church and Fairfield Women's Club. She was a past president of the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and was a charter member of Walton Club.

Her hobbies included attending a monthly breakfast fellowship with her high school classmates, singing, doing needlepoint, knitting, golfing and bowling.

Survivors include five children, Tom SMITH and wife Sue of Jackson, Ohio, Terry SMITH and wife Sheila of Clinton, Susan BARNES and husband Steve THORSON of Davenport, Bettye CONNOR and husband Ken of Douds and Tim SMITH and wife Becky of Chrystal Lake, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
