Page 2, Column 3DEATH COMES TO REV. J. L. GAGE
Rev. J. L. GAGE died early this morning at the home of his son, President GAGE, 1009 Illinois street. His death was due to pneumonia with which he had been ill but a few days.
John Lambert GAGE was born the 17th of April, 1842, in Ross county, Ohio, a son of Rev. William GAGE, pastor of Concord Presbyterian church. His elementary education was received at home. He then attended Salem academy, South Salem, Ohio and from there entered Marietta college from which he graduated 1864. He attended Princeton seminary two years and graduated 1867 from the Theological seminary of the northwest (now the McCormick Theological seminary, Chicago.) He was licensed by Chillicothe presbytery at South Salem, Ohio, 1866, and was ordained by the presbytery of southern Minnesota (now called Winona Presbytery) in 1867. He was commissioned to do mission work under the board of home missions by which he was given a field extending 500 miles east and west and 100 miles on either side of the Northwestern and Union Pacific railroad. He organized and built very many churches whose size and improtance testify better than words to the life of their first pastor. The latter part of his active ministry was spent in Wisconsin and Iowa. He was married in 1872 to Mary BOYNTON at Franklin, Ohio, who died in 1905. He is survived by three sons, Rev. William Boynton GAGE, pastor of the first Presbyterian church, Washington court House, Ohio; Rev. Howard Park GAGE, pastor of the First Presbyterian chruch, Parker, S. D.; and President Harry Morehouse GAGE, LL.D. of Huron college.
In 1910 Mr. GAGE retired from the ministry in broken helath (sic), going to Fairfield, Iowa. For the last six years he has made his home here with President GAGE. He will buried (sic) at Fairfield, Iowa beside his wife.
In his long life of useful service Mr. GAGE lived the life of christian ideals which he preached and his many friends will learn of his passing with great regret.
Funeral services will be held this evening at eight o'clock at the home of Dr. H. M. GAGE, 1009 Illinois street and the body will be taken on the evening train to Fairfield, Iowa.
