Charles H. GAGE, Last Of Pioneer Family, Succumbs

Charles H. GAGE, the last of a pioneer family which had been a part of this community since Fairfield was founded over a century ago, passed away Saturday afternoon at the Briggs-Eskew Nursing home.

He had been in failing health for the past three years and seriously ill the past week.

Until his health failed him, Mr. GAGE remained active and alert. His keen memory served as a link between the past and the present. He was a valuable source of information concerning incidents and developments which happened in the past.

He was an expert penman and was called upon quite frequently in years past to do scroll work, especially before modern-day printing. He prepared and drew the map which is now used as the official map of the city of Fairfield.

He compiled the map from original records in 1945. Later it was adopted by the city council for official use.

BORN IN 1870

Charles Herbert GAGE, 87, was born July 28, 1870, in Fairfield, the son of the late Cranmore W. and Sarah BLACK GAGE. He lived his entire life in this community.

His father, Cranmore GAGE, came to Fairfield as a small boy with his parents in 1839, the year Fairfield was founded. Cranmore GAGE lived to be within a few months of being one hundred years old, and at one time owned most of the land which is now the west part of Fairfield.

Charles H. GAGE was united in marriage on April 6, 1893, to Florence N. CORRY. She passed away September 28, 1939 (sic. correct date was September 25, 1939). He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and a sister who died in infancy.

He spent his entire life in Fairfield. At one time he operated a hardware store. He was educated in the Fairfield schools and attended Parsons college. Mr. GAGE was a member of the Congregational church and the Coin club, and he collected antiques for several years.

He is survived by a nephew, Fred Wallace GAGE, Clayton, Mo.; and a niece, Mrs. Margaret ZIMMERMAN, Sarasota, Florida.
