STRANG, Max D. -- Max D. STRANG, 71, of Solon, formerly of Milton and Cantril, died at 9:06 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

STRANG, Max D. -- Max D. STRANG, 71, of Solon, formerly of Milton and Cantril, died at 9:06 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A funeral was held this morning at Grace United Methodist Church in Milton, with the Rev. Scott Meador and the Rev. Elsa Lawry officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril.

Memorials to Iowa Lions Eye Bank or Cantril Grass Roots may be left at Pedrick Funeral Home or may be mailed to the family at 909 Duchess Drive, Solon 52333.

Mr. STRANG was born Nov. 16, 1937, in rural Jefferson County, near Libertyville, the son of J. Doyle and Marie TAYLOR STRANG. He married Yvonne CRIST Oct. 5, 1958, at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds.

Mr. STRANG grew up in Douds and graduated in 1955 from Douds High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He attended Parsons College and Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. He taught math and science in West Burlington from 1963-1965 and was the rural letter carrier out of the Milton Post Office for 32 years. He and his wife moved to Cantril in 1993. They moved to Solon in September 2008.

Mr. STRANG was president of the Iowa Rural Letter Carriers Association from 1978-1980. He also belonged to the National Letter Carriers Association. He had served as fire chief in Milton and was involved with getting the new Milton fire station constructed. He had served on the city council in both Milton and Cantril. He had been a longtime member of the Milton Lions Club. He belonged to the Cantril Grass Roots organization and Fairfield Weak-enders Camping Club. He also had participated in the construction of Waubonsie Park. He had been a member of Milton and Cantril United Methodist churches and had served as chairman of the board at both churches. He most recently was a member of Solon United Methodist Church.

Mr. STRANG enjoyed umpiring baseball and softball games, boating, camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking and watching his grandchildren in sports and other activities.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin STRANG and wife Tracy of Solon and Kirk STRANG and wife Denise of Vinton; one daughter, Carma POHL and husband Stephen of Columbia, Mo.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Norma BOGNER of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
