DR. CARPENTER DIES SUDDENLY

Was Stricken Alone In Office and Never Regained Consciousness

Dr. M. C. CARPENTER, for forty years a practicing physician in Fairfield, died this morning at 2:30 oclock after a sudden stroke in his office some time yesterday afternoon. He was discovered unconscious, lying on a lounge in the inner office by Vernon L. HAGUE, who has rooms at the Carpenter home, 304 South Main street, and who went to the office at 7:15 p.m. after Mrs. CARPENTER had expressed concern over her husband's absence. She had telephoned the office a time or two, but had at first supposed he had gone out on a round of calls and had been delayed.

Mr. HAGUE at once summoned a doctor, but there was no hope and Dr. CARPENTER did not regain consciousness. He was removed as soon as possible to his home and there the watchers awaited the end.

It is supposed that he may have been alone unconscious in his office for several hours as it was evident that he was just closing the office for his regular departue (sic) at 5 oclock when the attack came on.

However, nothing could have been done to stay death and it is supposed that he sought the couch as soon as he felt ill and that unconsciousness came at once.

Marcellus C. CARPENTER was born April 6, 1857 on a farm near Ottumwa and was the son of Calvin and Margaret CARPENTER. He was educated at Iowa Wesleyan college at Mr. Pleasant and then attended Rush Medical college at Chicago where he received his medical degree. He opened his first office at Kingston, Kan., and then came to Dahlonega in Wapello county where he remained until 1885 when he came to Fairfield where he had practiced continuously since.

He was married to Margaret JUNKIN and to this union were born two children, a little daughter who died when 4 years of age and a son who only lived to be 6 months old. Mrs. CARPENTER passed away seven years ago.

On November 27, 1919 Dr. CARPENTER was united in marriage to Clara HOWLETT who with one brother, Walter of Ottumwa and one sister, Mrs. William BAILEY of Mystic mourn his passing.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 oclock from the late home, 304 South Main street. Interment will be made in the family mausoleum in Evergreen cemetery.
