James William EDGETON

James William EDGETON, age 90, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Parkview Care Center.

Jim was born November 6, 1918 in Boone, Iowa the son of Charles and Lillie (BIXBY) EDGETON. Soon the family moved to Newton, Iowa where he graduated from Newton High School.

Growing up during the depression, Jim joined Roosevelt's Civil Conservation corps. Living in a tent in what would become Lacey-Keosauqua State Park. He planted hundreds of the trees growing there today.

When World War II broke out Jim enlisted in the Marines. He served from 1940 until 1946 achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was in the first wave of Marines to hit the beach at Iwo Jima and witnessed the famous flag raising.

After WWII Jim attended Finley Engineering College in Kansas City, MO.

While home from college he met the love of his life, Marilynn Lucille HITCHLER. They married August 9, 1947 in Kansas City, MO, and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary this past summer.

Following graduation in 1949 Jim began his professional career with the Iowa Highway Commission in Council Bluffs, IA. Jim retired in 1985. During his 36 years with the IDOT, Jim witnessed the construction of the Interstate 80 among many other highway projects. Following his retirement Jim worked for 20 years as a quality control engineer to Universal Rundle.

Him stayed busy during his retirement years. He served on the board for the Logan Apartments for 21 years. He was an active member of the Fairfield Lions Club and received the Warren Coleman and the Melvin Jones Fellow awards. He was named Lion of the Year for 2000-2001. Jim was named Fairfield Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1995 and had donated engineering time for the construction of the new Fairfield Public Library.

Jim was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. He served his church in many capacities including teaching the 2 and 3 year old Sunday school class for 30 years.

Most of all Jim loved his family and spending time with them. For over 30 years he looked forward to the annual family fishing trip to Blackduck, Minnesota.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Ed and Verne, a sister Bea STINE and a daughter-in-law Laura VAN DYKE EDGETON.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife Marilynn, daughter Nancy (Randy) KRUTZFIELD of Iowa City; 2 sons: James W. (LeAnne) EDGETON II of Fairfield and Thomas A. (Laura FAIR) EDGETON of Kirkwood, Missouri; and 5 grandsons: Mark R. KRUTZFIELD, James W. EDGETON III and his fiance Adena SCHNEDLER, Jonathan EDGETON, Ryan T. EDGETON and David A. EDGETON.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church with Pastors Mike Metz and Dave Peterson officiating.

Interment with military honors will follow at the Sugar Grove Cemetery near Newton, Iowa.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Fairfield Lions Club or to TENCO in Jim's memory.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Greiner and the physicians of the Medical Arts Clinic and the staff of Parkview Care Center for their loving care.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
