Mrs. Emily SYKES, 87, well known local resident, passed away Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alberta CARTER, Davenport. She had been in failing health for several years and suffered a stroke recently. Another daughter, Mrs. Nellie THOMAS, had cared for Mrs. SYKES at her home here for some time, going with her to Davenport about three months ago. Her husband, Sam SYKES, passed away in 1938. The made their home for many years at 304 E. Washington Street. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Nellie THOMAS, Mrs. Alberta CARTER, of Davenport, and Mrs. Fay MAJORS, of Wisconsin, and two grandsons, Ben CARTER, well known film comedian, Hollywood, Calif.; and Norman MAJORS, also living in California. Mrs. SYKES is also survived by a younger sister who lives in California. The body was brought here to the Weston Behner Funeral Home. Arrangements for the funeral services are incomplete at this time.

Note: Emily SYKES was buried at Old Fairfield Cemetery in the public grounds section (#64) where her late husband Sam SYKES was buried. Her death date year of 1944 has not been engraved on her portion of the joint headstone.

Her birth year on the headstone is 1859; in her obituary her age at death in 1944 was given as being 87, which would be 1857 as a birth year.
