DIED IN CHICAGO.

Paul HANEY Passed Away Very Suddenly There Wednesday In Hospital

Relatives and friends in this city were shocked last night to receive a telegram that the condition of Paul HANEY, who was at the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago where he under went an operation about two weeks ago for tuberculosis of the glands in the neck, was critical. Closely following this message came a second saying that Mr. HANEY had expired suddenly of acute pneumonia. The shock was so great that his young wife is prostrated with grief.

Two weeks ago in company with Dr. C. C. Tallman, Mr. HANEY went to Chicago and submitted to the operation, recovering from it so nicely that Dr. Tallman returned home the latter part of last week. Only yesterday the anxious young wife received a letter from him saying he had been for a walk around the hospital grounds and was feeling pretty well. It is supposed that he took cold while walking around and acute pneumonia developed rapidly.

Mr. HANEY was a promising young man. About eighteen months ago he was married to Miss Anna HOWARD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. HOWARD, who reside on East Burlington street. He was at the time of his going to Chicago a rural mail carrier from the city post office.

The remains will arrive in this city tonight and the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist church.

Stricken Down in Young Manhood.

Paul R. HANEY, rural mail carrier on route No. 3, this city, died very suddenly in Chicago Wednesday. He had gone to a hospital in that city about two weeks previous for an operation for glandular tuberculosis and was on the operating table the Friday and Monday following his arrival. The evening of the 29th ult. he was stricken with pneumonia and died before friends in this city could reach him. The body was brought here for interment. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Thos. Osborn assisted by Rev. Lewis Mendenhall. Company M, Fifty-fourth regiment, I. N. G., of which Mr. HANEY was a member for four years, was present in a body and in full uniform. Mr. HANEY was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. HANEY, residents of Fairfield for several years past. He was born in Van Buren county and was in the twenty-eighth year of his age. He was married here June 7th, 1905, to Anna R. HOWARD, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. HOWARD, and the wife of little more than a year survives him. Mr. HANEY was converted at the White Elm church in Mahaska county when he was seventeen years old. He united with the Free Methodist church, remaining a member until September 4th, 1904, when he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church in this city. He was a young man of excellent character and habits, faithful in the discharge of the duties which came to him, and there are many friends in the community who will regret his death and extend their sympathies to the stricken family.

Obituary.

Paul Raymond HANEY, son of John HANEY and Mary HOLLAND HANEY, was born in Van Buren Co., Iowa, October 26, 1879.

About one year ago glandular tuberculosis began to manifest itself, gradually getting a deeper hold upon him. On April 17th, accompanied by his physician, he went to the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago, where the affected glands were removed. He was recovering nicely from the major operation, and friends were greatly encouraged, when suddenly the dread pneumonia set in and speedily took his life.

He was converted at the "White Elm Church" in Mahaska Co., Iowa, when he was seventeen years old. He united with the Free Methodist church, remaining a member until September 4, 1904, when he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church in this city. He was united in marriage to Miss Anna R. HOWARD June 7, 1905. Dec. 1, 1906, he was appointed rural carrier and served in that capacity until April 1st, when he secured a leave of absence to go to Chicago for treatment.

Paul was sober, honest, pure in motive and life, God fearing and loyal to Christ; kind and affectionate, tender and true. In his death the community loses an upright citizen, Company M a conscientious and loyal comrade, the church a devoted and loyal follower of Christ, the father, a son of whom any father might well be proud, the wife a husband of rare fidelity and genuine manhood. In his death earth is impoverished and heaven is enriched.

Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist church last Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and the remains laid away in Evergreen cemetery. Rev. Osborn preached an eloquent and fitting sermon, and the large audience present but proved the esteem in which the deceased was held, while the masses of flowers were mute evidences of remembrance and affection. Members of Company M attended the funeral in a body.
