Joan M. COONEY

Joan M. COONEY, 77, of Rubio died from complications of multiple sclerosis at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mother Cabrini Church in Richland, with the Rev. Richard Adam officiating. Burial will be in Clay Cemetery, east of Richland (note: in Keokuk Co., IA).

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, where the family will be present 6-8 p.m.

A memorial has been established for Maplewood Manor in Keota. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church or may be mailed to the family at 193 Second St., Richland 52585.

Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home in Richland.

Mrs. COONEY was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Vernon L. and Alice D. LINDER SHERADEN. She married Robert Dean COONEY June 1, 1950, in Fairfield.

Mrs. COONEY attended schools in Hedrick and Rubio and graduated from Richland High School in 1950. She and her husband farmed most of their lives in the Rubio and Richland areas. She was a homemaker and worked for McCleery Cummings Calendar factory in Washington, Iowa, for 20 years. She retired in 1985 due to her health. She had been a resident of Maple Wood Manor in Keota for the past three years.

Mrs. COONEY was a member of Saints Joseph and Cabrini Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society and Rubio Ladies Club.

She enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Nancy BROWN and husband Gale of Oskaloosa and Sandy JOHNSON and husband Carl of Metropolis, Ill.; two sons, Michael COONEY of Washington, Iowa, and Patrick COONEY and wife Pamela of Pittsfield, Ill.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Louise POOR of Globe, Ariz., Evelyn SMALL of Blakesburg and Marilyn AUGUSTINE of Washington, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one great-grandchild.
