HUGHES, Lena May -- Lena May HUGHES, 101, of Keosauqua, died at 1:40 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua.
A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Elsa Lawry and Lloyd Wolf officiating. Burial will be in Purdom Cemetery in Keosauqua.
Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 7-8 p.m.
A memorial will be designated by the family at a later date. Gifts to the memorial may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 405 Franklin St., Keosauqua 52565.
Mrs. HUGHES was born Sept. 26, 1907, in Union Township near Utica, the daughter of Millard and Ella Dell RUNYON NICHOLS. She married Russell J. HUGHES March 11, 1925, in Fairfield. He died Feb. 2, 1974.
Mrs. HUGHES grew up near Bentonsport and lived in Fairfield, Keosauqua and Moravia. She also lived many years in Florida and retired to Keosauqua from the tax assessor's office in Titusville, Fla.
Mrs. HUGHES was a member of Keosauqua United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Lucille MOFFETT of Fayetteville, Ark., Cheryl SMITH of Fayetteville, Ark., and Donna BENTZINGER of Keosauqua; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leota ETKA of Keosauqua.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, August and Everett NICHOLS; and three sisters, Charlotte NICHOLS, Minnie WALLACE and Myrtle FRANK.
