JOOST, Winnifred Patricia -- Winnifred Patricia JOOST, 91, died peacefully Aug, 26 at Jefferson County Health Center. Her daughter Karen was at her side.

Winnifred, who moved from Arizona to Fairfield in 2007, was born July 8, 1918, in Greene, Iowa. Her great-grandfather, Joseph ROBERTS, built a homestead in 1846 near Fairfield.

After graduating from high school in Atlantic, Iowa, where she was elected Snow Queen in her senior year, Winnifred attended medical secretarial school in Chicago. She worked for a medical practice and, later, for Universal Oil Products.

Winnifred enjoyed gymnastics and competitive diving in her early years, and ballroom dancing, bowling and playing bridge in her later years. Some of the best times of her life were spent in Three Lakes, Wisconsin, where she spent summers fishing and prided herself on catching bigger fish than her husband.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert JOOST, in 1991, by her subsequent companion, Donald STIFF, in 2007, and her siblings Alice, Harriet, Barbara, Robert and Burt.

She is survived by her daughter Karen (Michael BORDEN) of Fairfield, her grandson John BORDEN (Lund, Sweden), her brother Dick TYLER (San Francisco), and her sister-in-law Loyce TYLER (Burlingame, California).

Memorials in Winnifred's name can be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or Noah's Ark Animal Foundation of Fairfield.
