HARRIS, Winifred WATERS ANDERSON -- Winifred WATERS ANDERSON HARRIS, 89, of Burlington, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at 12:30 p.m. at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City as the result of a head injury suffered in a fall at her home.
A funeral, followed by lunch, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington, with the Rev. Trevor Davis and the Rev. Mike Orthel officiating. A committal service and interment will be at 3 p.m. in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. Mrs. HARRIS was an eye donor to the Iowa Lions Eyebank.
Visitation is from noon until 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will be present until 8 p.m. following a brief Order of the Eastern Star service at 6 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the Winifred A. Harris Piano Education Foundation, PO Box 1339, Burlington 52601.
Mrs. HARRIS was born May 19, 1920, in rural New London, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth PRICKETT WATERS. She married Dale W. ANDERSON Sept. 29, 1940, in Mount Pleasant. He died Feb. 13, 1960. She then married the Rev. Frederic G. HARRIS Nov. 28, 1963, in Galesburg, Ill.
Mrs. HARRIS graduated in 1938 from New London High School. She was involved with all aspects of the ANDERSON family farm near Stockport. After her husband's death, she stayed on the farm until her sons graduated from high school. In 1960, she became the first woman seed corn dealer for Pioneer Hybrid Seed Co. Upon leaving the farm, she became a field representative for the American Cancer Society for Southeast Iowa. She later served as the county community action coordinator for Clay County. She also had been a tax preparer in Jacksonville, Ill., the executive director of the American Red Cross in Ford County, Ill., and a bank teller in Melvin, Ill.
Mrs. HARRIS was a musician, studying the piano early. Throughout her life she played for many church services, weddings and funerals.
Mrs. HARRIS was a member of First United Methodist Church in Burlington. She was a Muscatine district officer of United Methodist Women while in Morning Sun. She was a past worthy matron and 50-year member of Stockport Order of The Eastern Star and was an associate member of the Burlington chapter. She was a former member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem in Fairfield, John See Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and Stockport Rebekah Lodge No. 145.
Mrs. HARRIS enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, quilting, spending time with family and maintaining the history and records of the WATERS family. Following the death of her parents, she organized The Waters Family Reunion, an annual gathering held across the United States for nearly 30 years.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, James "Jim" ANDERSON and wife Diane of Chambersburg, Pa., and H. Eugene "Gene" ANDERSON and wife Joy of West Burlington; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pauline NUTSFORD of Port Hadlock, Wash.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson; seven brothers; and one sister.
