ALEX PICKARD NEARLY NINETY, DIES TODAY

Well known son of Jefferson county pioneers dies at age of 89

Alex PICKARD, 89, life-long resident and widely known farmer at (sic.) Jefferson county, passed away at 1:15 o'clock this afternoon at his home near Pleasant Plain. Mr. PICKARD had been in poor health for several months, and seriously ill for the past six weeks.

Funeral arrangement have not been completed.

Mr. PICKARD was born July 22, 1851, in Jefferson county. His family was pioneer stock, both grandfathers having come to Iowa in 1838. When Mr. PICKARD was 23, he moved to the farm just west of Pleasant Plain where he made his home for 56 years. He gained some measure of distinction this fall, by voting for the 68th year in the same precinct where he first voted when he was 21 years old.

Surviving are three daughters and one son, Mrs. Homer BRINTON of Brighton, Mrs. O.A. HARKEN of Fairfield, Mrs. Jennie JONES of near Pleasant Plain and Will PICKARD, on the homestead near Pleasant Plain also survives. Mr. PICKARD's wife preceded him in death nine years ago, and a daughter, Katie, passed away a number of years ago.

"Alexander PICKARD, eldest son of William and Mary Jane PICKARD, was born July 22, 1851, near Pleasant Plain and departed this life, January 2, 1941, age 89 years, 5 months and 10 days. He was united in marriage to Rhoda Francis (sic: Frances) GROVES, Nov. 14, 1872 and to this union were born five children, Mrs. A.J. HORNEY, deceased, Mr. W.A. PICKARD, Mrs. Millard JONES, Pleasant Plain, Mrs. O.E. HARKEN, Fairfield and Mrs. Homer BRINTON of Brighton. His companion preceded him in death nine years (sic: ago).

There are also seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Henry, of East Pleasant Plain, besides a host of relatives and friends who will mourn his passing.

Alex PICKARD spent his entire life near Pleasant Plain, having lived on his present homestead, 69 years. He was a very active man taking a great interest in the community life, having served on the school board during the erection of the present building.

He was a thrifty farmer, a splendid neighbor, a loving father and companion. After the death of his wife he has since made his home with his daughter, Jennie and her husband.

He was a life long member of the Friends church at Pleasant Plain.
