Note: Clinton CRENSHAW died in a mining accident on August 4, 1916 on a farm field in Jefferson County, Iowa. The first account of his death appeared in an extensive and graphic story published on Saturday, August 5, 1916 in the Fairfield Daily Journal.
On Monday, August 7, 1916 the following obituary was published in the Fairfield Daily Journal. While still somewhat graphic, it is considerably less graphic than the first account. It is transcribed as it was originally published:
"Body Recovered; Funeral Sunday
The body of Clinton CRENSHAW was recovered from the well in which he was killed Friday, on Saturday evening at six o'clock and the body was taken to Birmingham and later to the home of his parents near Stockport.
The body was recovered by miners who had been working all day in an effort to reach him. He was wedged cross-ways in the well shaft at the top of the tiling, lying doubled across the crooked tile which he went down to straighten. This was at a point about fifty feet from the surface.
Mr. CRENSHAW was only about 25 years old. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Emry CRENSHAW who live four miles north of Stockport. He came to Fairfield a little over a year ago, and opened a repair shop in New Chicago as SINN & CRENSHAW. Recently he has been working with Lem NELSON in the well drilling business.
He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Mary TEETER of Stockport, to whom he was married only about two years ago, as well as a sister, Mrs. Ed. BROWN, of Stockport, and two brothers, Ivan and Harold. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William HALL, are also living at Glasgow.
The funeral was held at the home of his parents Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, and was conducted by Rev. Ossman of Lockridge, who was assisted by Rev. Lute of Fairfield. The funeral was an unusually large ones, a great many friends of the family from all over this section attending. Interment was made in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
He is a nephew of Mrs. A.C. PAGEL of this city."
