This obituary was found in the CRANE family data sheet folder at the Fairfield Public Library, Fairfield, Iowa. It is dated Jan. 27, 1910 (date of death), but the publisher was not noted. A checking of microfilm records determined that it was originally published in The Fairfield Ledger, on February 2, 1910.

Mrs. S.S. CRANE, formerly Henrietta COCHRAN, has gone from our midst, but the good, kindly spirit which was hers will always be with good appreciative letters she has and makes us bear up under the loss we have sustained; hers was a useful and good life.

Henrietta COCHRAN, the daughter of John and Mary COCHRAN, was born at Glasgow, Iowa, January 21, 1850, and was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with S. S. CRANE at her old home on January 18, 1872. To them were born three children, Alice B., who died in infancy, Mrs. David BLOUGH of this county, and Mrs. Ed BELL of Cameron, Mo. Mrs CRANE departed this life January 27, 1910. She lived a good, kind, peaceful life, and her passing away was just as peaceful; a blending of the good in this life with the great good that lies beyond. For six years she assisted ther husband in caring for the criminals, vagrants and friendless in our county jail. And many are they who attended her funeral in a body received from the inmates of our jail after they had been given their freedom. The kindly spirit shown by her no doubt had more to do with keeping these men in the path of right living than their fear of jail or penitentiary walls; such a loving spirit as she has shown through her life would tend to do away with their use and make this world what God intended it should be.

Henrietta COCHRAN did her part to make the world better. In her early womanhood she assisted in teaching school at Glasgow and also taught in Clarke county.

She was a member of the Women's Relief Corps in Fairfield who attended her funeral in a body; Old Settlers will miss her hearty co-operation which was always extended at their reunions.

The esteem in which she was held in the community was shown by the large attendance at her funeral on Saturday, January 29. "She is still in God's care, the same as we always have been and always will be, then why should we mourn?"
