FITZWATER, Ralph 'Shorty' -- Ralph "Shorty" FITZWATER, 73, of rural Birmingham, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham.

FITZWATER, Ralph Eugene 'Shorty' -- Ralph Eugene "Shorty" FITZWATER, 73, of Winchester, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at home.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham, with Larry Smith officiating. Burial will be in Winchester Cemetery in Winchester.

Family visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Birmingham Public Library may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 13631 Osage Ave., Birmingham 52535.

Mr. FITZWATER was born June 12, 1935, in Jefferson County, the son of Otto M. and Vera M. DOWNING FITZWATER. He married Barbara BROWN Dec 9, 1960, in Birmingham.

Mr. FITZWATER lived all his life in Jefferson and Van Buren counties. He worked at Iowa Malleable Iron Company for 41 years.

Mr. FITZWATER had served in the United States Army.

He enjoyed reading, woodworking, gardening and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Melody Jean SUNKEN and husband David of Indianola, Janet Renee FITZWATER of Indianola and Linda Bethine FITZWATER of Albia; one granddaughter; three sisters, Louise McFARLAND of Florida, Doreen McCABE of Milan, Mo., and Kay HOYLE of Washington, Iowa; and two brothers, Keith FITZWATER of Pekin, Ill., and Larry FITZWATER of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Don, Dean and Dale.
