LEDGER, Lester R. -- Lester R. LEDGER, 82, of Brighton, died early Monday, April 13, 2009, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

LEDGER, Lester R. -- Lester R. LEDGER, 82, of Brighton, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saints Joseph and Cabrini Church in East Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. Charles J. Fladung and the Rev. Robert Streigel officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the church, where the family will be present at 6 p.m. and Prayers for a Christian Wake and Rosary will be at 7 p.m.

Memorials to Saints Joseph and Cabrini Church may be left at the service or may be mailed to the family at 3207 W. Van Buren Ave., Fairfield 52556.

Gould Funeral Home in Brighton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. LEDGER was born Feb. 3, 1927, near East Pleasant Plain, the son of Edward P. and Margaret M. PECK LEDGER. He married Betty Lou ADAM Feb. 14, 1953, in Harper.

Mr. LEDGER grew up in the Pleasant Plain area and attended country school at Hawkeye No. 8. He worked as a farmhand for an area farmer, drove for Griffith & Hedburg Dairy in Washington, Iowa, and farmed his own farm. He later worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. He had been in failing health before his death.

Mr. LEDGER served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a long-time member of Saints Joseph and Cabrini Church and was a member of the parish council. He also was a member of the Farm Bureau and was a 60-year member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in Harper and Washington.

Survivors include his wife in Fairfield; four daughters, Joyce NOVAK and husband John of Toledo, Mary CRANE of Fairfield, Debra PALMER of Altoona and Bonita DOUGHTY and husband Marshall of North Platte, Neb.; five sons, Stephen LEDGER and wife Vicki of Richland, William LEDGER and wife Collette of Iowa City, Ronald LEDGER and wife Linda of Pekin, Ill., Robert LEDGER and wife Shelly of Minnetonka, Minn., and Richard LEDGER and wife Melanie of Oak Grove, Mo.; 24 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Clarabell VITTETOE of Washington, Iowa, Geraldine HUBLER of Durant and Dolores SIEREN of Keota; and two brothers, Jim LEDGER of Washington, Iowa, and Virgil LEDGER of East Pleasant Plain.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maxine HAHN; and three brothers, Ernest, Elmer and Donald LEDGER.
