VERNON, Craig -- Craig VERNON, 86, formerly of Fairfield, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 in San Jose, Calif.

Mr. VERNON graduated from Fairfield High School in 1940. He was a licensed engineer and had a long career working for the Iowa and California highway departments, as well as others.

Mr. VERNON was a combat veteran of the United States Army, having served in Europe. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

Survivors include one brother, Tom VERNON of Palo Alto, Calif.

VERNON, John Craig -- John Craig VERNON, 86, formerly of Fairfield, died Saturday, March 21, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. VERNON was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Oskaloosa.

Mr. VERNON grew up in Fairfield during the Great Depression and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1940.

Mr. VERNON was a licensed professional engineer, registered by the state of California, and a licensed construction inspector, certified by the state of California. During his 50-year career in construction engineering, he worked for the Iowa State Highway Department, United States Bureau of Reclamation, Department of the Navy, California Department of Highways, California Department of Water Resources, Tudor Engineering Company and city of Mountain View, Calif. He worked on large construction projects in Iowa; Wyoming; Hawaii; Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands; and at many locations in California.

Mr. VERNON was a combat veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army in Europe. He was awarded a Bronze Star with an insignia for valor for his actions during an assault in Germany.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Michele NAVA and husband Alfred; one stepson, John MURRAY; one brother, Tom VERNON; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen.
