HENDRICKS, Richard -- Richard HENDRICKS, 62, of Salem, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Brian Swafford officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at the chapel, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

A general memorial has been established.

Mr. HENDRICKS was a commander in the Iowa National Guard with members from Washington, Iowa, and Fairfield.

Mr. HENDRICKS was born Sept. 27, 1946, in Fairfield, the son of Roscoe and Thelma B. MESSER HENDRICKS. He married Patricia A. RICH SMYTH Jan. 24, 1991, in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. HENDRICKS graduated from Fairfield High School in 1964. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard with A Company 224th Engineer Battalion of Burlington. He retired as captain after 26 years of service. He worked at the Mount Pleasant Department of Corrections in the maintenance department for 23 years.

Mr. HENDRICKS enjoyed camping at Keppyville, fishing, garden tilling, watching NASCAR and sprint car racing, traveling and helping neighbors and friends.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, Thelma RIDINGER of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Michelle McBETH and husband Jody of Mount Pleasant and Susan CARTER and husband Dennis of New London; four sons, Chad HENDRICKS and wife Shelly of Mount Pleasant, John SMYTH and wife Wende of Mount Union, Michael SMYTH and wife Beth of Mount Pleasant and David SMYTH of Ashville, N.C.; one brother, Robert HENDRICKS of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Phyllis MOORE of Oregon; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Shawn HENDRICKS; his father; his stepfather, Leonard RIDINGER; and one brother, Roxie HENDRICKS.
