John C. KARBACKA was born in Burnett, WA on January 25, 1919. He was the son of Jacob KARBACKA and Maria SIPPOLA, who came to this country from Finland in the 1890s. His parents moved to Ashtabula, Ohio in 1922. He attended Harbor High School and graduated in 1936. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

John loved working with wood ever since he was a child, and carved many beautiful things, such as elaborate ships, etc. He had a background on the construction field with more than twenty-two years in the home building area. For eight years of this time, he was employed by the Laird Lumber Company as a cabinet maker.

He spent thirteen years sailing on the Great Lakes and held a pilot's license for seven years. During WWII, he held the rank of lieutenant in the Coast Guard, because during the war, the Coast Guard commissioned officers on the Great Lake's ships as officers in the Coast Guard to ship steel and other war materials to defense plants.

In 1969, he was employed as building inspector for the city of Ashtabula. He retired in 1982 after fifteen years of service.
