GOEMAAT, Donald L. -- Donald L. GOEMAAT, 70, of rural Birmingham, died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009, as the result of falling into a grain bin on his farm.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Greg Baum officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

Open visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 10-11 a.m. Friday.

Memorials to Keosauqua Fire and Rescue may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 13592 Jasmine Ave., Birmingham 52535.

Mr. GOEMAAT was born Sept. 21, 1938, in rural Birmingham, the son of Bastiaan "Boss" and Ella POPE GOEMAAT. He married Martha CARR July 15, 1961, at Zion Bible Church in Douds.

Mr. GOEMAAT graduated from Birmingham High School and attended Iowa State University. He spent his life farming in the White community between Birmingham and Douds. He also operated a seed business from his farm.

Mr. GOEMAAT was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Philip GOEMAAT and wife Norlene of Milton and Andrew GOEMAAT and wife Tammy of Byron, Minn.; three daughters, Christina RUSH and husband Merle of Streator, Ill., Rebecca GOEMAAT and husband John CECKA of Richmond, Va., and Mary BENTLEY and husband Adam of Hampton, Va.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Joyce DEUSER of Fairfield; and one brother, Dean GOEMAAT of Douds.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Birmingham man trapped in grain bin dies

BIRMINGHAM (AP) -- A rural Birmingham man was killed after he was trapped in a grain bin.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office says the accident on Tuesday morning is not considered suspicious and will not investigate it further.

Police say rescuers pulled 70-year-old Donald GOEMATT (sic) from the grain bin on his farm and took him to Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say they don't know how GOEMATT (sic) was trapped inside.

Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is in charge of funeral arrangements. Open visitation is set for 2-5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Friday prior to the 11 a.m. service at the funeral home.
