GARDNER, Margaret E. -- Margaret E. GARDNER, 89, of Ottumwa, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Hospice House.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ottumwa, with the Rev. Mark Young and the Rev. Charles Luers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.

Visitation began at 9 a.m. today at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, Wapello County Historical Society or Hospice at 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottuma 52501.

Mrs. GARDNER was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Fairfield, the daughter of Hiram Sylvester "Vester" and E. Josephine KLINGAMAN STARK. She married Charles M. GARDNER Sept. 28, 1941, in Fairfield. He died Sept. 25, 1990.

Mrs. GARDNER was a 1937 graduate of Fairfield High School and a graduate of Iowa Success School. She worked in the bookkeeping department at John Morrell & Co. She and her husband farmed their family farm west of Chillicothe for many years. Creating her own tour business, she escorted tours all across the United States, Canada and many foreign countries for 20 years.

Mrs. GARDNER was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Golden Jubilee Circle of King's Daughters, High Noon Kiwanis, Women's Club, Red Hat Society and Wapello County Historical Society. She had served as a 4-H leader and on the conservation board. She also was involved in many community service projects through the years.

Survivors include one daughter, Eileen DAY and husband Rodney of Ottumwa; two sons, Stephen GARDNER and wife Barbara and Maurice GARDNER and wife Melissa, all of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Frank RIVEY of Ottumwa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph STARK; and one sister in infancy, Bess.
