SLOAN, Wain L. -- Wain L. SLOAN age 84, of Fairfield, IA, died Sunday March 1, 2009 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday March 6, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield with Rev. Mike Metz officiating. Burial with military rites will be 2:30 PM, at Silent City Cemetery, Monroe, IA.

Visitation will be Thursday March 5, 2009 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Behner Funeral Home with Masonic rites at 6:30 p.m. Family visitation to follow.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa, or Speech & Hearing for Children, Scottish Rite Care, Scottish Rite Heritage Society, or the First United Methodist Church. Cards and memorials may be sent c/o: 1011 S. 7th St., Fairfield, IA 52556.

Wain Leonial SLOAN age 84 died Sunday March 1, 2009 at his home. He was born in Des Moines, Polk Co. IA, September 11, 1924, to Charles Winfred and Mae Violet (SANDEEN) SLOAN. Wain was raised in the Oskaloosa, IA area, moving with his family to Monroe, IA in 1941, where he graduated from high school.

He was married November 3, 1943 in Miller Memorial United Brethren Church in Des Moines, Iowa to Mila Eveleen FOREMAN. To this union were born three daughters, Deanna Mae, Barbara Ann, and Lois Irene.

Wain was in the Navy during World War II, serving the Pacific theater of war on the aircraft carrier USS Corregidor, and earning five battle stars. After the war, he returned to Monroe and worked in Hawkins Garage until starting to work for the Iowa State Highway Commission, now IDOT, in 1949, as mechanic in Jasper County. In 1966 Wain transferred to Fairfield, IA as District Mechanic for twenty counties in SE Iowa. He retired from the Iowa Dept. of Transportation in 1986, after 37½ years.

Wain was a member of the United Methodist Church in Monroe, IA where he and Mila were youth leaders. They transferred to Fairfield United Methodist Church in 1966, where they enjoyed fellowship and camping with their Sunday School Class.

He enjoyed an active lifestyle, camping and traveling, and taking an active part in the Masonic Lodge. He served as Master twice in Monroe and twice in Fairfield, and served as Secretary in both Lodges. Wain was Master of Kadosh in the Davenport Scottish Rite Consistory. He had been Director of Maundy-Thursday and Easter Morning Services in Ottumwa for several years. Wain passed the Masonic Instructor test and received his District Lecturer Certificate. He received the Knight Commander Court of Honor, and the Red Cross of Constantine, St. Ignatius Conclave, and was Grand Chaplin for the Grand Lodge of Iowa. Wain was coroneted thirty third degree Inspector General Honorary, was awarded Knights of the Royal Arch. He and Mila are members of the Scottish Rite Heritage Society, and Wain was one of the Directors of the Sottish Rite Charitable and Educational Foundation of Iowa located in Des Moines, and named on the Advisory Conference of Davenport Consistory.

Wain's family always came first. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His happiest times were when he could be with them. After retiring, he enjoyed doing woodworking, making clocks for members of the family and friends, plus many other wood and stained glass items. He liked helping family and friends with their projects. As Director of the Scottish Rite Heritage Society, Wain actively supported "Alzheimer Research," until the financial goal was met. Since then with the Heritage Society he has supported "Speech and Hearing for Children."

Wain is survived by his wife; their daughters: Deanna CAMPBELL(John) of Malcom, NE, Barbara BROUWER (Curtis) of Crawfordsville, IN, and Lois BYRD of Houston, TX. He was blessed with eight grand children: Mark BROUWER and wife Susan, Tom CAMPBELL and wife Christina, Matthew CAMPBELL, and Michael BROUWER and wife Debra, William CAMPBELL, Scott BYRD and wife Amber, Valerie LONG and husband Clark, and Barbara CAMPBELL, and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers Keith (June) SLOAN of Pella, and Marvin (Jane) SLOAN of Knoxville, and his sister, Juanita BINNS of Oskaloosa.

Wain was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles W. SLOAN, Jr.
