BARKER, Joseph A. -- Joseph A. BARKER, 86, of Chillicothe, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, Mo.

A memorial service, with Masonic rites, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua. Burial, with military rites, will follow the service at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.

Family visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials to American Legion Beer-Barker Post 113 of Keosauqua or Celestial Lodge No. 413 of Douds may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 7995 LIV237, Chillicothe, MO 64601.

Mr. BARKER was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Tolona, Mo., the son of Mernice and Nora ELLIS BARKER. He married Iona M. McCORMICK Aug. 15, 1947, in Fairfield. She died Aug. 26, 2004.

Mr. BARKER was a 1940 graduate of Keosauqua High School. He was a 1948 graduate of Parsons College and a 1954 graduate of Drake University. He worked as a teacher and school administrator in various Iowa school districts, including Fairfield, Batavia, Wellman, West Chester, Mechanicsville, Coggon, Redfield, Guthrie Center and Muscatine. He had been superintendent in Guthrie County.

Mr. BARKER served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946.

He was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion and United Methodist Church in Chillicothe. He was a 50-year member of the Masons.

Survivors include two sons, Rick BARKER and wife Betty of Topeka, Kan., and Mahlon BARKER and wife Sandy of Dallas Center; two daughters, Cathy WOMBWELL and husband Glenn of Marceline, Mo,. and Marti MILLER and husband Mike of Chillicothe, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Hazel, Maxine and Jenny; and two brothers, Ellis and Bill.
