EMERSON, Edwin C. -- Edwin C. EMERSON, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Union Park Health Services in Des Moines.
A service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Ottumwa Cemetery.
Open visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Emerson Memorial for Archives, Area 24 of Alcoholics Anonymous, care of Hamilton Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines 50309.
Mr. EMERSON was born March 25, 1916, in Ottumwa, the son of Joseph and Helen BROWN EMERSON. He married Oma Elizabeth "June" McFARLAND Feb. 14, 1940, in Centerville. She died Aug. 2, 1991. He married Dorothy VAN ROEKEL Nov. 21, 1992. She died March 4, 2004.
Mr. EMERSON was co-owner of Central Cellular in Knoxville from 1995-1998. He had owned Gateway and Snow White Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Des Moines and had been general manager of several hotels in Des Moines, Waterloo, Burlington, Muscatine and Bloomington, Ind.
Mr. EMERSON was the oldest active member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Iowa. He also was a member of the Iowa Commission on Alcoholism.
Survivors include one brother, Max EMERSON of Fairfield; one sister, Maxine HUMPHREYS of Burlington; one stepson, Timothy VAN ROEKEL of Batavia, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Marsha GADBERRY of Olathe, Kan.; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to both his wives, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy ALLENDER and Virginia STECKEL.
