MERCER, Gerald Eugene -- Gerald Eugene MERCER, 84, of Keswick, died following a brief illness Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English, with the Rev. John Tunnicliff officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A memorial fund has been established for James Murphy American Legion Post No. 319, Keswick First Responders and Thornburg United Methodist Church.

Mr. MERCER was born Nov. 9, 1924, in Packwood, the son of Edward and Iva RAMSEY MERCER. He married Helen Marie OLIVER June 16, 1946, in Packwood.

Mr. MERCER grew up in the Packwood area and graduated from Packwood High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Besides working in the education field, Mr. MERCER worked at Louden Machinery in Fairfield and at the Sears Farm Store in Ottumwa. He received his bachelor's degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, his master's degree from Northeast Missouri State and his specialist in education degree from University of Missouri. He taught in Hedrick and was principal at Ollie before moving to the tri-county district in 1968, where he was superintendent until his retirement in 1990.

Mr. MERCER was a member of Thornburg United Methodist Church and James Murphy American Legion Post No. 319.

He enjoyed vacationing and traveling with family, pheasant hunting, fishing, golfing and bird watching.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Deborah ATWELL and husband John of Rock Falls, Ill.; three sons, Gary MERCER and wife Terry of Indianola, Bryan MERCER and wife Renee of Ashton, Md., and Matt MERCER and wife Tinell of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale MERCER of Folsom, Calif.; and three sisters, Mary HUDDLESTON of Burlington, Arlene NELSON of Fairfield and Jean MARSHALL of Packwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wayne, Richard and Raymond MERCER; and one sister, Reva MYERS.
