ZIHLMAN, Phil -- Phil ZIHLMAN, 67, formerly of Brighton, died early Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at Clarinda Mental Health Institute in Clarinda.

A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date. The body has been cremated.

A memorial has been established for the WACO School District industrial arts/auto shop. Memorials may be mailed to the family at 3304 Highway 78, Brighton 52540.

Arrangements have been in the care of Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

Mr. ZIHLMAN was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Washington, the son of Howard and Geneva EYESTONE ZIHLMAN. He married Thelma VORHIES Dec. 8, 1963, in Germanville. They were later divorced.

Mr. ZIHLMAN grew up east of Brighton, graduated from Wayland High School in 1959 and attended Parsons College. He primarily worked in the auto industry, selling new and used cars in Burlington and Keokuk. He owned his own used car dealerships in Keokuk and Alexandria, Mo., for a number of years. Later, he worked for the FDIC as a bank liquidator in St. Joseph, Mo., and Carrollton, Texas. He has resided at Clarinda Mental Health Institute since August 2006.

Survivors include four children, Kim ANDERSEN and husband Steve of rural Brighton, Kendra PITTMAN and husband Craig of Springfield, Ill., Kevin ZIHLMAN and wife Kate of Des Moines and Kirk ZIHLMAN and wife Emily of Houston, Texas; and three grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.
