RICKS, Joseph -- Joseph RICKS, 91, of Wayland, died at 6:11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa.

Arrangements are pending at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

RICKS, Joseph Gleede -- Joseph Gleede RICKS, 91, of Wayland, died at 6:11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa, following a brief illness.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cottonwood United Methodist Church in Wayland, with the Rev. Linda Renken officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials have been established for the Cottonwood Women's Group and Cottonwood Cemetery Association. Memorials may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 2734 Ginko Ave., Washington, IA 52353.

Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home of Brighton.

Mr. RICKS was born Sept. 9, 1917, in Coppock, the son of John and Selina ERHARDT RICKS. He married Edith "June" ZICKEFOOSE Dec. 22, 1946. She died Nov. 11, 2003.

Mr. RICKS attended Coppock schools and Byerly Music School in Peoria. He received his bachelor's degree from Upper Iowa University in 1962 and graduated from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Ill., in 1965. He worked as a carpenter in Coppock and worked for the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway in Peoria, Ill. He played the guitar and base violin on WMBD Radio Station in Peoria. He entered the ministry in 1958 and served many churches, including Sunmer, Murphy, Cranston, Cairo, Alburnett, Lafayette, Seymour, Promise City, Mount Union and Wesley Chapel.

Mr. RICKS served in the United States Army during World War II in the Philippines and in Alaska on the White Pass and Yukon Railway.

He was a member of the Brighton Lions Club.

His hobbies included gardening, rock hunting, fishing, making jewelry and playing the guitar and harmonica. He also sold Watkins Products and his handcrafted jewelry.

Survivors include one son, Joe A. RICKS and wife Vickie of Richmond, Ind.; one daughter, Lani MEADER and husband Stanley of Washington, Iowa; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence WOLFE and Lilian RICKS; four brothers, Hal, Art, Benjamin and Harold RICKS; and two granddaughters.
