WHITEBREAD, Hoyt Lester -- Hoyt Lester WHITEBREAD, 91, formerly of Fairfield, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009.

A funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, with interment in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Open visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, with family visitation from 5-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church in Keokuk.

Mr. WHITEBREAD was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Wapwallopen, Pa., the son of Wilson H. and Anna SMITH WHITEBREAD. He married Jeannette PETERS June 27, 1942, in Berwick, Pa. She died Feb. 24, 1994.

Mr. WHITEBREAD was raised on a small farm with a water-powered saw and grain milling family business. At 19, he felt called to ministry. Having only an eighth grade education, he entered Franklin and Marshall Academy, Lancaster, Pa., for preparatory work for college, accomplishing this in two years. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1942 from the Seminary. In 1957, he received a master's degree in sacred theology from the Lutheran Seminary in Chicago, Ill. He and his wife served churches in Danville, Pa., Williamsport, Pa., Chicago, Ill., Keokuk and Wausa, Neb. He was pastor at First Lutheran Church in Fairfield from 1963-1971. After retiring to Keokuk in 1979, he served numerous churches in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri and was an interim pastor 25 times.

He was a student of history and theology and enjoyed classical music and traveling. He was known for his display of tulips every spring.

Mr. WHITEBREAD was a member of the International Platform Association, Smithsonian Institute and Hoover Library Association. He was listed in "Who's Who in the Midwest," the Social Registry of Iowa and the Directory of International Biography. He was a past president of the Keokuk Community Concert Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Chrilla Peters McKENZIE and husband Carl of St. Louis, Mo.; one son, David Hoyt WHITEBREAD and wife Susan of Keokuk; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and one grandson.
