PORTER, James E. -- James E. PORTER, 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Washington.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery in Anamosa.

No visitation is planned.

Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. PORTER was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Martell, the son of Harry and Anna ELLISON PORTER. He married Billie FRAZER July 10, 1951, in Clinton, Okla. She died Oct. 31, 1987.

Mr. PORTER enlisted in the United States Navy Nov. 15, 1935. He served as a corpsman, laboratory technician, blood bank specialist and medical photographer in a variety of military installations throughout the world. He was honorably discharged May 24, 1955.

He received an honorary doctor of science degree from Great Lakes College in Detroit, Mich. He was a former resident of Bettendorf.

Mr. PORTER's memberships included the Anamosa Masonic Lodge No. 46; Bettendorf Early Morning Lodge No. 672, where he was past master; Snow Lodge No. 44, of LeClaire, where he was past master; Davenport Consistory; Kaaba Shrine; H-Twelve Club; and Order of the Eastern Star. Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion Post of Bettendorf, Anamosa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4077, Retired Officer's Association, United States Navy Fleet Reserves Association and Saint Peter's Episcopal Church of Bettendorf.

Survivors include one brother, Wayne "Jack" PORTER of Fairfield.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude "Mollie" and Helen "English," and one brother, Ralph "Bill" PORTER.
